They even have a special day to celebrate it: February 9, National Pizza Day.

After World War II, pizza became incredibly popular in the United States, to the point where it is known as "America's Sweetheart." Soldiers returned home with a renewed love for this dish and quickly made it a part of their everyday lives.

Although there are countless varieties of pizza, only one has a Designation of Origin: Neapolitan pizza. Officially known as *verace artigianale napoletana pizza* (authentic artisanal Neapolitan pizza), it was recognized by the European Union in 2010 as a traditional agri-food product of Italy.

The Largest Pizza Ever Made

The record for the largest pizza in the world was achieved on December 13, 2012. An Italian team composed of Dovilio Nardi, Andrea Mannocchi, Marco Nardi, Matteo Nardi, and Matteo Giannotte created a pizza measuring 1,261.65 square meters in Rome. It was named “Ottavia.”

In 2017, pizza was not only recognized for its flavor but also for its cultural and social importance, being declared an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Pizza is much more than just a dish; it is a symbol that brings people together around the table.

The oldest pizzeria on record is Port'Alba in Naples, Italy, a place that marked the beginning of the tradition of eating pizza as we know it today.
